About time for an “ice-cream” post? Perhaps it’s time! The gNOMes love a nice cup of icy dessert once in a while, and this is one of the interesting ones over here in PJ. Located in Paradigm Mall, PJ, Cielo Dolci is a gelato place that serves handcrafted style gelato, made from actual ingredients instead of the normal processed stuff. Cielo Dolci roughly translates to “heaven’s dessert” in Italian, so that’s a pretty bold statement!
Cielo Dolci has a nice small shop with seats and friendly counter staff, who will allow you to try out as many flavors as you want before making your choice. The food gNOMes usually try almost everything, so we can say they’re pretty patient.
Outside the shop one will notice a special blackboard with a few flavors-of-the-day. This means that there are certain flavors which are “seasonal”, or available just once a week. So it’s kinda like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – You never know what you’re gonna get!
A nice menu hangs at the top over the counter, so pick your favored combo. The gNOMes generally go for the small with 2 flavors as we just like a light snack to-go while window shopping after meals.
There are some special “seasonal” flavors, as mentioned earlier. We believe that perhaps they do rotate some of the more common flavors as well. Here are some of the more unusual flavors:
- Tau Fu Fah (beancurd jelly)
- Nasi Lemak (yes, you heard that right!)
- Earl Grey Tea
- Coconut Gula Melaka
- Strawberry Balsamic
- Chocolate Chilli Padi
- Cempedak (jackfruit)
- Beet Root with Mascarpone Cheese and Poppy Seeds
Out of all the flavors we have tried, we love peanut butter (gNOMe 2 is a PB junkie), Tau Fu Fah, Earl Grey Tea, some of the other fruit flavors. But one experience that Cielo Dolci has over their other rivals is Nasi Lemak gelato. That is something different. If you don’t really know what to expect then just expect it to taste like what it is – Nasi Lemak. We never thought such a thing was possible, but there it was. One can even taste some traces of kacang (peanuts), ikan bilis (anchovies), as well as sambal (spicy chili paste).
Verdict: You cannot call yourself a true Malaysian until you have tried Nasi Lemak gelato. But seriously though, this is a gelato shop for the more adventurous food gNOMes even though there are some very “normal” flavors as well. Its ingredients taste pretty original, texture is smooth and creamy, although the gNOMes don’t really fancy their Durian flavored gelato. Go with the unusual ones and you’ll be fine.
