A pleasant, surprise visit to this place when our initial lunch target was closed for the day. Located in the same row as Hock Thai Restaurant (you can find Sarawak Laksa here!), Standing Theory opened its doors to the public last November 2013. A relatively new coffee/chill out place, but both gNOMes have heard so much about it.
Although located at a lesser explored commercial area in SS2 and where parking is scarce, this place boasts of good flat white and “BBC waffles”. Now the BBC waffles caught both of our attention.
The interior decor is pretty simple and down to earth, just fancy lights, chairs and grey painted walls. We noticed that they love the color orange and grey!
The menu seems hand-scribbled, the coffee counter boasts of huge coffee machines and cakes.
4 cakes to choose from, to pair with your coffee. Red Velvet, Hazelnut Chocolate, Carrot Walnut and Peanut Butter.
How can you not order coffee when you visit a coffee place? Iced Mocha, priced at RM12. Iced mocha is usually a combination of coffee, milk with chocolate syrup. We felt like the Iced Mocha was a little bit too heavy on the coffee side and would prefer more milk.
VD Roll (RM13). Or in layman’s term : Vietnamese Banh Mi (see also this post). Sourcing their meat from a local butcher, meat patty was generously marinated with spices, pepper and salt. Topped with carrots, cucumbers, chopped nuts and coriander, VD Roll mimics pretty closely to the original Hanoi Vietnamese Banh Mi, but just lesser meat. Vegetables were fresh, baguette was coated with a thin layer of mayo. However, both gNOMes didn’t fancy the baguette as it was cold and too chewy albeit stuffed with pretty yummy meat 😦
BBC waffles (RM13), which both gNOMes strongly believe that it stands for Banana Bacon Cornflakes ice cream waffles. The cornflakes ice cream is supplied by the Fat Baby Ice Cream, an ice cream supplier which is currently making waves in the local ice cream industry. They have other flavours on sale at Standing Theory, mainly Chocolate, Apple Crumble, Coffee Crunch, Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter + Fudge going for RM8 per 100ml cup.
The waffles were cooked in the waffle iron till dark golden brown, making the waffles very crispy on the outside without the burnt taste. It came with grilled bacon strips, which gNOMe 2 felt were a little bit too dry, coupled with sliced bananas and drizzled with maple syrup. All in all, this sweet treat was indeed delectable.
Verdict : BBC Waffles is the shizzz. Go NOW. Period.
