Baci Italian Cafe, Citta Mall, PJ

When we received the invitation to review Baci, boy were we thrilled! Like literally! There are a bunch of Italian restuarants in Kuala Lumpur, but just a handful of them in Petaling Jaya. Usually when both gNOMes crave for good Italian pasta, Italiannies at The Curve is where we will head to. But Italian Cafe? That’s a cross breed between American + Italian! Anyway, cut to the chase.

The review wrote 7:30pm, and we almost stopped breathing. With the constant evening heavy downpour in KL and PJ everyday, getting to Citta Mall all the way from KLCC looked rather bleak. But there’s nothing stopping us. Anything just for FOOD! šŸ˜€

Baci, under the Chaswood Resources Group, has been around in Citta Mall for 3 years. Baci, in Italian language, means kisses. So be prepared to receive loads of kissesĀ feel at home, at ease here while dining the evening away. Baci’s furnished with wooden fixtures, an open kitchen, together with indoor and alfresco seating.

Open Kitchen Concept

We managed to arrive at 7:50pm, and were ushered to our seats almost immediately. With our tummies rumbling, we were very, very prepared to dig in whatever that comes our way!

Flat White [RM8.90]; Butterscotch Flavoured Latte [RM9.90]

Coffees at Baci are from Lavazza blends. A very safe bet, not too bitter, not too sweet and low on the acidity. A perfect cuppa or two over good conversations.

Smoked Beef Bacon Sandwich [RM16.90]

Sandwiches are nearly every men’s staple food, wanting a little taste of home but tired of the usual rice and noodles dishes. What separates a good sandwich from the rest lies with, besides the fresh ingredients, the yummy, freshly baked breads. The plate of yummy sandwich consists of devilish smoked beef bacon with fresh tomato slices & greensĀ on homemade ciabatta bread.

The sandwiches were very comforting, layered with generous servings of smoked beef bacon and greens. Freshly baked Ciabatta breadĀ was soft yet slightly crunchy, making the whole experience enjoyable.

Smoked Salmon Sandwich [RM17.90]

gNOMe 2 is a sucker for arugula, any dish that has arugula obtains extra brownie points. This platter of smoked salmon (yay!) + arugula (double yay!) on multigrain bread (triple yay!) spread with wholegrain mustard mayo is a DELISH! The whole combination is so healthy, so you weight watchers, relish in this!

Baci bakes their breads daily, and they are on sale to those wanting to buy a loaf or two. The loaves range between RM4.50 to RM9.50, and in our opinion, a very good bargain.

Greek Salad [RM15.90]

Crisp cucumber slices, raw onions, tomatoes, olives and mini cubes of feta cheese tossed with homemade greek dressing over a bed of fresh romaines. What more can we ask for? Fresh, delicious and very healthy.

Not interested in the variety of salads they have? Then build your own salad for only RM18.90!

Spicy Shrimp Aglio Olio [RM17.90]

gNOMe 1 particularly loves Aglio Olio and this dish, definitely did not fail him. A beautiful plate of spicy pasta with fresh shrimps, artichoke, black olives and tomatoes in garlic onion olive oil garnished with chilli flakes and parsley.

Although we noticed that the Aglio Olio was stir fried with olive oil instead of tossed the usual Italian way. Both gNOMes feel very strongly about our pastas, we still love our Aglio Olio tossed with olive oil. Albeit stir fried, the Aglio Olio was delectable, catering to the Malaysian palates.

Smoked Duck 9″ Pizza [RM20.90]

Thin crust pizza to satisfy cravings! Not too much dough, toppedĀ with smoked duck, tomato and bell pepper bits andĀ arugula. The cheese itself is a delish, has the cream cheese like texture yet retaining the gooey goodness of melted cheese.

Oxtail Stew [RM23.90]

Chunks of oxtail stewed over 4 hours with carrots, celery and flavourful beef stock. With tender loving care. Underneath the whole affair is a bed of warm garlic mash potatoes that complements the oxtail perfectly. This stew is perfect on a rainy day, andĀ both gNOMes had an enjoyable dinner after a downpour in PJ. If we can only have it our way, we would prefer a ‘lighter‘ version of this stew.

Chicken & Mushroom Pie [RM18.90]

A layer of puffy pastry atop a pot of creamy sauce loaded with leek, chicken breast, arugula, mushrooms, carrots, potatoes, green peas and Italian herbs. Another dish perfect for a pouring night. Imagine eating this pie by the fire place (if only we have one!), and with a book in hand.

The layer of filo pastry was beautifully done, flaky and buttery, with whiffs of pastry fragrance floating mid air. The creamy sauce with ingredients proved to be a good pairing with the filo pastry, though both gNOMes felt that the sauce was a tad too salty for our liking. As comforting as it is, we prefer a ‘lighter‘ version of this pie as well.

Verdict : Looking for a place to de-stress and dine the day away? Baci’s the place to be. We love the setting of this place, and the selection of meals we can find here. And oh, did we mention that the place is overlooked by this very friendly, down to earth manager? We adore him for his services and hospitality šŸ™‚ This place doesn’t serve alcohol and it’s pork free.
