Yoshinoya & Hanamaru Udon, Mid Valley Megamall, KL

YOSHINOYA!

Fun Fact : gNOMe 1 had his first taste of Yoshinoya in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, and gNOMe 2, in the famous Shinjuku prefecture.

Little did we know that there’s Yoshinoya at Mid Valley! Imagine the happiness and excitement when we stumbled upon Yoshinoya. FYI, the ones we had in HK and Tokyo respectively were mind-blowing albeit being a fast food diner.

The one in Mid Valley incorporates the famous Yoshinoya and Hanamaru Udon under one roof. The place was packed to the brim, but thankfully, being a fast food restaurant, the turn over rate is pretty high. Patrons may need to only wait 5-10 minutes for empty seats.

This place practices a self-service method, so once you grab your seats, go line up and place your respective orders. Now, over to the food!

Beef Bowl [RM 9.80 for Regular; RM 23.60 for Large]

Add ons : Miso Soup [RM 2.80]; Egg Soup [RM 2.80]; Green Tea [RM 1.50]

This tasty beef bowl is the signature dish of Yoshinoya, combining thinly-sliced beef with a tasty soy-based sauce (the chains in Malaysia and Singapore make an effort to omit mirin, a mildly-alcoholic sauce essential for Japanese food). The result is surprisingly comforting. But it would be better if they increased the meat-to-rice ratio.

Chicken Hamburg Bowl [RM 8.80]

The hamburger patty here was nicely seasoned, however it was a tad too dry for our liking. We would stick to the gyudon, thank you very much!

Ontama Bukkake [RM 8.00]

As you may have read earlier, Yoshinoya is attached with their sister company, Hanamaru Udon here. There was a long queue for the udon, as it looked really appetizing. Nevertheless, the gNOMes would not be deterred in the pursuit of good food. The result was a wonderful ontama (literally ‘hot spring egg‘!) which was broken, mixed evenly with the broth. The gNOMes were enjoying a fairly good bowl of Udon, bringing back memories of Arata.

Verdict : Although not the same level in terms of taste as compared to our experiences in Tokyo and Hong Kong respectively, the gNOMes rather enjoyed the food here. Overall a quick and fuss-free comfort meal.
