An impromptu weekend outing to Mid Valley has brought the gNOMes to Tiffin’s by Chef Korn. A tad tricky to spot, Tiffin’s is located on the Third Floor Mezzanine in the North Court. Sounds complicated? One tip : Head over to Daiso, and just right opposite Daiso, take the escalator up. You will be able to find Tiffin’s in no time.
Spearheaded by Chef Korn who also runs Erawan in Kota Damansara, Tiffin’s is a casual dining place sporting an array of local Thai street fare. He credits the inspiration to his grandmother, whom handed down generations-old recipes.
One will be greeted by an array of multi coloured tiffin carriers that are neatly arranged at the display shelves upon entering. Tiffin carriers just evoke some memories don’t they? Back in those days were meals were packed and placed in Tiffin carriers 🙂
[Left to Right : Tomyum Mojito [RM 9.80]; Lemongrass Tea [RM 6.80]]
The Tomyum Mojito is such a bold blend. A few shots of Tom Yum soup coupled with lemongrass, galangal, Kaffir Lime Leaves with a punch of soda. There you go. A fizzy drink with a beautiful Tom Yum after taste. Try it if you are bold enough.
On the other hand, if you want to stay safe, the Lemongrass Tea is a good choice. Sans sugar, this pot of Lemongrass Tea is soothing and calming. And the best part, it’s refillable! 🙂
Beef Ball Rice Noodle Set [RM 25.80]
Chef Korn’s home made recipe consisting of Australian tender shin meat, poach beef, beef balls in a bowl of delectable broth with your choice of Thai Rice Noodles or Egg Noodles.
Not too salty nor too sweet, the broth is aromatic and robust in flavour. Add in a pinch of chilli flakes for the spicy sensation, or fish sauce for the salty little kick. The beef noodles is indeed pleasing to the tastebuds, and has a generous serving of meat.
Condiments are provided via test tubes, which was rather amusing. The gNOMes still could not find a co-relation between Tiffin carriers and test tubes. But anyhow, the condiments provided are fish sauce, sugar, chilli flakes and white vinegar. Add them in to suit your taste buds.
Also, if one ordered set dishes, a Tiffin carrier containing side dishes will be given. Usually the Tiffin carrier will contain 3 types of appetizers/dessert.
In this round, the gNOMes were served with chicken wings with Thai sauce dip, Chef Korn’s special fruit salad and oranges.
Thai Basil Pork Set [RM 19.80]
Wok fried minced pork meat with chilli padi and holy basil served with rice and a sunny side up. Both gNOMes were given the impression that this dish is particularly spicy, so to play safe, gNOMe 2 requested for spiciness factor to be slightly toned down.
However, once served, a mouthful of the minced meat proved to be very salty, slightly on the oily side and was totally not spicy. One have to definitely pair the minced meat with rice, eating it on it’s own will proved to be of a challenge because of the saltiness. gNOMe 2 had also wished she didn’t request for a less spicy version 😦
Stewed Pork Knuckle Set [RM 19.80]
A plate of tender pork knuckle served with fluffy white rice topped with home made preserved vegetables, kailan and half of an egg. The tender pork knuckles were indeed very, very tender and the meat was properly cooked. This reminded the gNOMes of the yummy-licious Khao Kha Moo in Bangkok which they had the last time. With that said, all Khao Kha Moo lovers should give this a try. 🙂
Verdict : Tiffin’s by Chef Korn actually serves pretty delectable Thai food albeit slightly on the steep side. The gNOMes will definitely pay Tiffin’s another visit again to sample other dishes like Chef Korn’s signature Green Curry with Salted Egg and Pork Belly in Dark Sauce. Now who’s hungry? 🙂
