1st in Malaysia, Okonomi brings the idea where patrons are able to create their sushi rolls from scratch. Do not worry if you lack creative juices, Okonomi won’t be quick to judge. Actually, they would love it if you can get crazy! Go nuts, they won’t judge!

With that being said, Okonomi provides over 80 high quality ingredients for patrons to customize from. What’s even better, the rolls here are guaranteed Halal! Double yay! πŸ˜€

Check out their menu right here –Β Menu

Rolls come in 3 sizes, Small, Medium and Large.

Small Roll – 3 Normal Fillings, 1 Sauce, 1 Topping – 6 pieces of sushi [RM 13.90]

Medium Roll – 4Β Normal Fillings, 1 Sauce, 1 Topping – 8 pieces of sushi [RM 16.90]

Large Roll – 5Β Normal Fillings, 1 Sauce, 1 Topping – 8 pieces of sushi [RM 19.90]

3 simple steps to customize your own roll. Choose your base, then the filling, and top it up with a topping and sauce of your choice.

Ain’t that hard eh? Now let’s get the ball rolling.

Iced Matcha Latte [RM 7.90]

A fairly popular drink at the shop, this is actually really good. No powdery taste, and a good balance of matcha and milk. One to accompany your sushi rolls.

White Rice done Seaweed Maki Style with Baby Octopus, Salmon, Mixed Mushrooms

topped with Ebikko and Spicy Mentai Mayo Sauce

This was everything rolled gNOMe 1 liked about sushi rolled into one. Very tasty as all the ingredients were fresh and in generous proportion. Enough said.

White Rice done Seaweed Uramaki Style, filled with Sliced Avocado, Marinated Tofu Skin, Fried Salmon

topped with Tongarashi with a side serving of Sesame Salad dressing

Made with a little more culinary sense in mind, this was actually the best of the lot. The gNOMes actually enjoyed how the heaviness of the avocado contrasted against the rest of the roll, giving it a very nicely balanced taste.

Brown Rice done Seaweed Maki style with Teriyaki Chicken, Sliced Strawberries and Tamago,

topped with Bird’s Eye Chilli! with Japanese Curry dipping sauce

The experiment. Even right down to the toppings, the gNOMes could not resist taking a risk with this one. Bird’s eye chili was the real deal! Spicy, but to the gNOMes’ liking. The sliced strawberries surprisingly provided a rather refreshing taste to the whole mix. If there was one thing to complain about this, it was that the teriyaki chicken didn’t exactly have that signature teriyaki taste.

Verdict : This place definitely redefines what we know about sushi and rolls by approaching it in a unique manner. By their “as you like it” tagline, they’re basically challenging the consumer to find a combination they can’t make to work. So far on the evidence of the 3 rolls we’ve had, we would say that they wouldn’t have been beaten many times. By the way, this is Halal πŸ™‚
