Red Bean Bag, Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

Well, we guess most of you foodies should have heard about Red Bean Bag eh? Red Bean Bag, as we believe, is already a household name to many. The gNOMes have finally managed to pay this place a visit, so hooray! πŸ™‚

Located at Publika, Red Bean Bag is the home to our very own Malaysia barista champion, Jason Loo. Jason had 3 beautiful years honing his barista skills at Red Bean Bag. He now co-owns Yellow Brick Road and The Wicked Pancake Parlour with 3 other entrepreneurs. Both Yellow Brick Road and The Wicked Pancake Parlour are located at Jalan Batai.

We arrived at Red Bean Bag slightly after 1pm, and it was packed to the brim. Even we left at 2pm, the place was still fully packed.

[Left to Right : Chai Latte [RM 10.00]; Latte [RM 10.00]]

The Chai Latte was slightly on the milky side, lacking on the spices area. Wasn’t too bad a cuppa, but nevertheless, wasn’t the best we have had. While the Latte was indeed smooth to the taste, this wasn’t as good as the cuppa the gNOMes had at Yellow Brick Road.

Signature Baked Eggs [RM 22.00]

Two cracked eggs in a bowl of lamb, chicken & beef bratwurst topped with mozzarella cheese and baked to perfection. The baked eggs are then served with 2 slices of sourdough bread. The sourdough bread was fantastic, and while the baked eggs were generally quite good, unfortunately it wasn’t as good as we expected it to be, since the sauce was slightly a little too thin and lacking a little body.

The Atlantic [RM 25.00]

House smoked salmon served with salmon pearls, wilted Australian baby spinach, sauteed mushrooms, fluffy French toasts, drizzled with Hollandaise sauce and topped with two perfectly poached eggs. The dish just screams perfection, there was nothing we can fault Red Bean Bag with. Eggs were poached perfectly, salmon smoked to perfection. The whole combination was just delectable and made the tummy happy. πŸ™‚

Sumo [RM 24.00]

Pan fried home cured salmon steak on a bed of potato rosti, wilted Australian spinach topped with poached egg and seaweed hollandaise sauce. Salmon steak done well, the wilted spinach with poached egg complimented the dish beautifully. If there’s one thing we find fault in, it’s the rosti. We felt that the rosti was a too under seasoned, a sprinkle of salt and pepper would do wonders.

Verdict : This place overall seems to have a lot to offer, with a wide variety and tempting menu. The food is very good as well. Come for the coffee and food, but this isn’t the place to sit around and hangout with friends as it is always full and absolutely bustling. Oh by the way, this place is pet friendly! Meow!

  1. I’ve always wanted to come here! I hope they’re baby-friendly too lolx… One of my ex-schoolmate is frequent here, but now he’s partnering with the owner here and another 2 more friends to open the “Yellow Brick Road” not sure u’ve heard of him, Shaun Liew? Hehe, but I just love that “Sumo”! Atleast now I know it’s not just about coffee here, there’s actually food lolx… Thx for sharing πŸ˜‰

    1. Hi Sebrinah! Not too sure if this place is baby friendly but we think it is πŸ™‚ Oh nope we haven’t met Shaun Liew before though we have had interactions with Jason. We can’t wait to do a proper review on YBR πŸ˜€

  2. omg the food looks really good and the coffee the coffee! sorry it’s early morning and i wish i can have some of that coffee right now.

    1. Haha we wished we had our coffee fix this morning too! Was too busy to even grap a cuppa 😦 Hopefully you will be able to refuel on your caffeine tomorrow morning πŸ˜€

  3. Been there before, i did my building technology assignment at the Red Bean Bag. The staff was super friendly and i love the fact that the cafe is a pet friendly cafe πŸ˜€ Thanks to your post, i never realised that Sumo was on the menu. Must try!

  4. I’ve heard about the place but never been there. It seems very much like Ben’s – food and pricing wise? I really don’t enjoy having hot drinks served in a glass. Feel cheated!
