Rimba & Rusa, established by Wondermilk, needs no introduction. This place has all the right factors, i.e., established by experienced, veteran talents who run Wondermilk, a place themed with underlying tiffany blue and white colors, making it one of the good spots for Instagram worthy shots and this place is Halal so Malaysians of all generations and background are welcomed to dine in here.
We had the privilege of paying Rimba & Rusa a visit last Friday night, and the place was packed to the brim we were only seated 30 minutes later.
It was unfortunate that we went during night time, the beauty of this place, lacking natural sunlight, couldn’t be captured through our lens.
Nearly every nook and cranny screams Rimba and Rusa’s mantra, ‘EVERYDAY IS SUNDAY‘. Well, we sure do hope everyday is indeed SUNDAY! 😛
Blueberry Ripple Soda [RM 10.00]
A good way to start the meal with a nice little fizzy drink. Armed with little chunks of blueberry bits, this is a refreshing beverage.
Shakshouka Baby [RM 18.00]
One from the all-day breakfast menu, this appeared to be like baked eggs. The result was actually quite amazing, as the spices combined beautifully to produce something fragrant, sour and savoury, with a touch of Indian to it (maybe because of the spices). The 2 slices of toast served along with it was also soft and fluffy, a perfect foil to the dish.
Angel hair pasta paired with peppered meatballs and a tomato-based sauce, one could never go wrong. However this wasn’t one of our favorites at this place though, a tad too oily for our liking, under seasoned and the price is slightly on the steep side.
Bello Aglio Olio [RM 28.00]
Much was expected of this Aglio Olio, but little was actually in the way of justifying our excitement. The main issue was that the seafood had a little too much of the ‘sea smell’ (bau hanyir, in malay), which wasn’t masked by the inclusion of any particular seasoning or herbs. Furthermore, one gets tired of this dish while eating it, eventually being unable to finish it. And once again, too oily for our liking. Avoid.
Nasi Lemak Ayam Panggang [RM 28.00]
If the last dish was a miss, this is a HIT. Nasi Lemak was fragrant and the ayam berempah (spiced chicken) was excellent. The sambal (chili paste), being on the more savoury side, also packs everything the gNOMes like about sambal. Portion is rather huge, although this dish would have earn more gNOMe points if the price wasn’t this steep.
Chicken & Mushroom Pizza [RM 35.00]
This is one that needs to be eaten straight out from the oven. A generous helping of cheese with a good balance of chicken slices and mushrooms. Finally, topped off with Aragula. The result is a pizza heavy in flavor, not necessarily taste. Although it isn’t for those who don’t like thicker pizza base.
Caramel Explosion [RM 16.00]
Indeed as the name suggests, this IS an explosion of caramel. Nothing more, nothing less. Way too sweet for the gNOMes though. Get a bunch of friends to share this. 🙂
Verdict : Generally this place has a great atmosphere – although slightly school-like with the nametags on the servers. A good hangout place with friends and seems to be very popular these days. The food is generally hit and miss, but the ‘hits’ are worthwhile. Prices of the food here are slightly steep, so we might be only coming here when we’re feeling slightly well-to-do.
