What does a gNOMe do during a holiday? If you guessed “look for new NOM places”, then you are absolutely right! Seeing as nowadays the weather has been absolutely depressing, the traffic situations on our highways have also taken its worst turn in decades. The gNOMes didn’t have much choice but to venture nearby.
What was originally planned as an Ipoh trip soon turned into a Klang trip. What else to eat but some good ol’ Klang Bak Kut Teh? 😀 Not wanting to be caught up in the crowd, the gNOMes had a friend to recommend a less mainstream one. The last we tried was Teluk Pulai Pottery’s Bak Kut Teh, time for a change!
Smack right in the vicinity of its rather illustrious competitor, this shop isn’t Teluk Pulai, but it’s Hock Lai (pun not intended), meaning “luck come”. Apparently it is a shop owned by the family of a friend’s friend.
Now for the test!
Soupy Bak Kut Teh for 2 pax
The gNOMes ordered pork ribs and pig stomach in the soup. The soup was tasty, and the gNOMes had some several refills. This would be suitable for those who aren’t keen on having their soup too salty. However the gNOMes would have liked it more if it was a little more thick and more flavourful in the herbs department.
Dried Bak Kut Teh for 2 pax
This was the winner for us, as with other Bak Kut Teh shops lately. The gravy was extra spicy, but worth every bite. The gNOMes soon found themselves fighting over this dish. Even the ladies’ fingers were not spared. The sliced ladies’ finger added a wonderful touch to this dish, a hint of green in a huge pot of meat.
Verdict: Taste-wise, this is slightly more mild than that of their other competitors like Teluk Pulai, the price was rather affordable as well considering we had 5 people all-in-all. The bill came up to roughly RM12 per pax/RM60 in total. A nice place to have your Bak Kut Teh when one is sick and tired of squeezing with the crowd.
