Shell Out, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara

Both gNOMes actually stumbled upon this place while roaming around Kota Damansara on New Year’s Eve for a good NYE dinner. Most restaurants we tried walking in turned us away.

“Oh, do you have reservations?”

“No?”

“Sorry Ma’am, we are fully booked”

😦

Little did we know that it was such a challenge finding a place to have our dins. We were this close, yeah, this close to making do with just a simple dinner at a random coffee shop. But both gNOMes preserved on and this is what happened when we passed by Shell Out.

Brightly litted and decorated. Such NYE mood! 😀

And of course, without batting the eyelid, the $100 question of the night popped up again. “Nope, sorry, we don’t have reservations, and we would like to try our chance at walk in.

We were tired and famished. And just wanted to have a good evening together, prior to ushering in the New Year. And oh, Happy New Year 2015 you gNOMe folks! 😀

So there was this dude who greeted us and told us to give him 5 minutes to check on available seats. And he included this remark “You guys are our customers. I don’t want to lose you”. We were so impressed with that remark, and 5 minutes later, we were seated.

WOW. 😀 😀 😀 (ok TL;DR; now to the food!)

M-Sized Crabs [RM55/piece] in Shellbang Cajun-Flavored with Half Broccoli [RM9.90]

These crabs were super fresh and juicy, the flesh, in tact and in big chunks. The broccoli well-cooked as well. But the pièce de résistance was the Shellbang Cajun-flavored sauce blend – A trademark of Shell Out. There was everything in it, sweet, spicy, savoury. This made the already fresh crabs taste Oh-so-yums!

Silver Pomfret [RM13.90]

A decent serving of fried small silver pomfret as a side dish. 5 in a basket, fried till golden brown, crispy and fragrant. Perfect as an appetizer or as snacks before the main meal is served.

Clockwise from top : Half Shell Scallop 250g [RM20.90]; M-Sized Crab [RM55/piece] with Half Broccoli [RM9.90]; Clams 500g [RM18.90]

The gNOMes really enjoyed the la la (aka clams, which was ordered at OMG-level spiciness) and even more so the scallop (cooked in butter garlic). Crabs were extremely fresh, as mentioned above, la la was enjoyable, but the winner of the lot was the half shell scallops. Succulent, very fresh and cooked in fragrant blend of butter garlic sauce. If only they slow down on the salt, it would have been perfect. The sauces used for the crabs and clams were also excellent, leaving the gNOMes chowing away like barbarians!

Octopus 20 pieces [RM20.90] with Half Broccoli [RM9.90]

Such good food deserves a 2nd round order! The gNOMes had another round of M-Sized Crabs with 20 pieces of Octopus cooked in curry powder. When the gNOMes ordered the octopus, the expectation was the Japanese kind of octopus. When the octopi arrived, it wasn’t quite what we expected. Nevertheless, not to be deterred, the gNOMes happily chowed down. Unfortunately, it tasted rather rubbery and overcooked. On the other hand, the crab was amazing.

Verdict : This place gets all the marks for excellent customer service. Even on a busy festive day they apologized profusely to us for not being able to serve us better, and even threw in a discount as well! Taste-wise, just excellent. Perhaps the food might have been a little on the salty side, but the gNOMes were too busy licking their fingers for it to matter. Price-wise, surprisingly reasonable for a seafood place. The gNOMes will definitely be back again! This time, hopefully they will go easy on the salt! 😉
